Keynote announced for Tea & Coffee World Conference

We are very pleased to announce Emmanuel Torrejon will be a keynote speaker at Tea & Coffee World Conference 2019. Mr Torrejon is director of the Philippine Coffee Board and Honorary Secretary of the ASEAN Coffee Federation.

Mr Torrejon’s impressive career in the coffee industry started in 1970, when he joined Escaler and Company as a research assistant. The company gained a coffee client by the name of A.C. Leon Israel Inc. (ACLI) and from here, become educated on Philippine Coffee Industry.

Escaler and Co. went on to export coffee to the U.S. and Europe. Mr. Torrejon was the trader responsible for exports primarily to ACLI, which had wide markets in the United States and some parts of Europe. In the process he was able to train the in the U.S. under the late Mr. Warren Muller of ACLI in San Francisco. Coffee Cupping was introduced to Mr. Torrejon during this training.

Mr. Torrejon went on to work with the team that launched Gourmet Coffee, a coffee roasting operation under Escaler and Co. Mr. Torrejon was the lead cupper of all coffees bought and roasted by the company. Gourmet Coffee was one of the pioneers of coffee roasting in the Philippines.

In 1987, together with Mr. Nicholas Matti, Mr. Torrejon left Escaler & Co. and formed a joint venture with Berisford Ltd of London to form a Philippine company, Oriental & Occidental Co. Inc.

O&O, as it would be known, built a coffee mill in the town of Amadeo, Philippines and was known as Beneficio Amadeo. O&O was a leading exporter of Philippine coffee during the late 80’s into the early 90’s, with offices in Bacolod City and coffee buying stations in Davao and Nueva Vizcaya. Unfortunately, O&O was dissolved in 1995 as the British partners pulled out due to financial problems overseas.

During this time, Mr. Torrejon also became a Director of the defunct Coffee Exporters Association of the Philippines (CEAP).

In 1989, Mr. Torrejon & Mr. Matti formed CAFEX Inc., a coffee roasting business. The company sold roasted coffee to restaurants, cafes and QSRs.

Mr. Torrejon continued to operate CAFEX and in 1997, purchased a Probat roaster in order to expand the business. Business grew swiftly and Mr. Torrejon went into the selling of coffee brewing equipment and accessories Under Continental Beverage Corp.

During this time, Mr. Torrejon became director of the Specialty Coffee Association of the Philippines (SCAP) and eventually succeeded into becoming the president of the association.

Mr. Torrejon was invited to join the Philippine Coffee Board in 2008 as a Director in charge of Northern Luzon, which he still holds at the present time.

In 2011, Mr. Torrejon decided to join forces with Mr. Hubert Young and formed Coffee Roastmasters Alliance Inc. (CRAI), a roasting company. Mr  Torrejon held the position of President.

CRAI was acquired by UCC Japan in 2014 and formed UCC Ueshima Coffee Philippines Inc. (UUCPI), Mr. Torrejon remained with the newly formed company as sales director and eventually became business development director in 2016.

Mr. Torrejon went on to be elected to the Board of the ASEAN Coffee Federation (ACF), a regional coffee group composed of representatives from ASEAN coffee producing and consuming countries. In 2017, Mr. Torrejon was elected Honorary Secretary of ACF.

During his coffee career, Emmanuel has participated in numerous coffee training sessions, symposiums and trade fairs in the U.S., Europe and Asia. He is also a barista trainer, barista competition judge and has given various talks and classes on coffee and coffee roasting.
